On Friday, July 18th, EPA joined representatives from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District and the Cuyahoga River AOC Advisory Committee, as well as other federal, state and local partners, to celebrate the recently completed West Creek Flume Spillway Project.

NEORSD received a $7M Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant for construction, with additional funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation, totaling $15M. Construction of the West Creek Flume Spillway Project began in 2022. The project removed a concrete channel and improved fish passage throughout the entire 6,500 linear feet project.

As one of 14 required Management Actions, the project’s completion marks another step toward delisting the Cuyahoga River AOC. 10 Management Actions still need to be completed with several projects currently underway or in the feasibility/design stage. EPA and our partners continue to make strides in completing this work and major ecological and economic improvements are already occurring in the area.
